Mr. Ahrens has been the Director of Bands at Bear River High School since the Summer of 2004. Beginning in the Summer of 2014, he is excited to take on the role of Director of Choirs as well. His duties include the direction of the Men's Chorus, Women's Chorus, BR Voices (Advanced Mixed Ensemble), Jazz Unlimited (Vocal Jazz), Starlite Express (Show Choir), and the Concert Chorale. It is his belief that everyone has a certain level of aptitude, or natural ability in music. And that endeavoring to develop that aptitude through the study and performance of music enhances and improves every other part of our lives.
Mr. Ahrens has played the horn since the fourth grade. He has a Bachelor of Music degree with emphasis in horn performance from the California State University at Northridge, a Bachelor of Music degree with emphasis in music education from the University of Utah, and a Master of Music degree with emphasis in instrumental conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University. He performs locally with the Sacramento Brass Quintet and the Sacramento Symphonic Winds. He also often performs with the Resident Orchestra of Runaway Stage Productions in Sacramento. He has sung tenor with the University of Utah Concert Chorale, directed by Dr. John M. Cooksey, and the Traditional Choir and Contemporary Music Group of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Coos Bay, Oregon.
Mr. Ahrens maintains an active presence in the Music Education world online as well. He is a long-time contributer to the #MusEdChat Twitter collaboration group (@MrAhrens) and the Band Director group on Facebook. His music education blog "Sound Education" has received notice and praise from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA).
